Heat and Humidity and Hills, Oh My!

So I am a little late sharing about the Mississippi Blues half marathon!  Sorry, but life happened and I had to pick up my pace and then catch my breath!

Never the less, I have to tell you about the Blues!  The day started out foggy and humid and the temperature was rising!  So that meant running a very hilly course with heat and humidity. Not a good combination for anyone, but especially me!  When it is hot and humid I tank!

The forecast called for a possibility of rain; I was hoping but it did not happen!  Instead the sun came out full force!  I am used to my shaded trail, not full sun!  Winter was gone and it was suddenly Spring!

I ran with two friends and we started out keeping our pace nice and steady only to realize that we needed a bathroom break at mile two!  Not wanting to use port a potties we decide to stop at a coffee shop with one bathroom!  Well it turned into a six-minute break, but we pressed on!

The Blues is a tough course and my goal was to finish not gain a PR, but I had made the mistake of driving the course a couple of days before the race and that made things harder because I knew what was coming.  Knowing the course did not help (preparing through training helps!)  I will not do that again! I am sure someone will disagree, but running has taught me a few things such as, I do not need to know the course or every pot hole in it!  I just need to know the direction that I am going and accept that  I can only see so far ahead.  So I need to run the course as it comes to me and realize that  I can only take the next step!  Very much like life!

Hubby and me after the race!

Yes, I did finish the race in 2:55 and my hubby gained a PR!  He finished in 1:50, two minutes faster than his St. Jude half and this was a much tougher course!

New Year and New Goals

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  We have been very busy celebrating and visiting and being with family.

There was lots of eating and merry-making as well!  Despite my continued training I still gained some weight (just a little).

With the new year comes new resolutions and goals for running as well as life in general.  I am still working out my plan (late as usual!).  Obviously I need to work on order and time management!  But I have a general idea of where I am headed!

Hubby and I are running the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon on Saturday.  It looks like a challenging course with lots of hills, but the super blingy medal will be worth it!

We will run with a lot of our training group in this race which adds to the excitement and there will be great blues music that sweetens the deal too!

This will be our second half marathon, but the first for the new year.  That seems  so unreal, considering that when I started running in January 2011 I could not run for 30 seconds!  Now I can run for 13.1 miles!  Plus I have gained some speed.  Amazing!

The hubby and I plan to continue training with Fleet Feet and prepare to run either the New Orleans Rock N Roll or the Country Music Nashville Half.  New Orleans is closer so it may win out!  Stay tuned for more details!
